The Statistics
With two in three Australians diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.
The statistics are almost comparable in horses and companion animals to that in humans. Skin tumours are some of the most common cancers seen in the dog and cat, especially in Australia and New Zealand where there is a high incidence of solar-induced skin cancer. Skin cancer accounts for one-third of tumours in dogs, and one-quarter in cats. More severely, skin cancer, or neoplasia, is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in horses, accounting for 45 to 80% of all cancers diagnosed.
The majority of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun.
